STRIVE recently held its flagship annual celebration for students. The festive banquet highlighted students’ personal victories and honored the caregivers and guardians who support them. STRIVE works in partnership with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to provide the school-based support and resources youth need for academic and personal success. Staff, DCFS case workers, caregivers and guardians all work in concert to provide a foundation of stability and love that results in improved life outcomes for youth in care.
STRIVE’s impact was summed up well by this year’s keynote speaker and former program participant, Erianna. In a heartfelt speech, she shared her thoughts about working with STRIVE Counselor Davina Anderson and others at Youth Guidance.
“I grew up moving from home to home. Meeting new families and friends and also transferring to a lot of schools. That caused me to become depressed and angry more than I imagined I would ever be….I couldn’t find any stability in my life. I became involved in a program that had staff that guided me in a positive direction. They helped me find things that made me happy, the positives in life. With these people guiding me, I developed a new outlook on life. I would like to say thank you to all of you.”
