Youth Guidance’s Becoming a Man (BAM) program recently welcomed Aspen Institute’s Forum for Community Solutions to a special site visit at Foreman High School. Foreman’s BAM program, which is sponsored by Youth Guidance Board member John Raitt, has been operating successfully for more than four years. The visit included discussion of strategies for providing high-quality, culturally sensitive wrap-around programming for boys and young men of color. 2015 BAM Graduate Julius Robinson shared his own experience of participating in the program for more than four years. “I was struggling,” he recalled. “I was getting into trouble and sometimes I felt ready to give up.” Robinson, one of several young men who visited the White House for President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative signing in 2014, credited involvement in BAM with transforming his vision of himself and his future.
