Nine students from Bowen High School’s Working on Womanhood (WOW) program are preparing for an unforgettable journey to the White House. On Thursday, January 29th, local nonprofit My Favorite Outfit helped the young ladies prepare by providing a special Pop-Up Boutique at the school. Each girl was outfitted from two head-to-toe with donated items including high-end clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories.
The ‘Dream Journey’ to D.C. takes place February 17-19 and includes a special meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama. Students will also tour national monuments, visit the Department of Justice and receive a private campus tour of Howard University.
“I’m so excited!” said Stephanie Pooraz, a junior who beamed at the thought of taking her first airline flight. Bowen Principal Nia Abdullah commented, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and will be inspirational for our girls.” The students will also receive a congratulatory visit from Mayor Rahm Emanuel next month.
The group was chosen based on an essay submission, academic achievement, school attendance, and their overall progress in WOW. The WOW program addresses five core values, including self-esteem and leadership. The program also tackles anger management, peer pressure, and interpersonal relationships.
