Youth Guidance Students Visit City Council Meeting

blog29On March 18th, Alderman Carrie M. Austin invited 21 Becoming A Man (‪‎BAM) and Working on Womanhood (‪‎WOW) students from Fenger Academy High School to City Hall for an official council meeting. Accompanied by counselors Zach Strother and Katie Wild, the students met with Deputy Chief of Staff, Kenneth Bennett who shared his own journey into politics and encouraged the group to keep their long-term goals in sight.  Among his words of advice: “Believe in yourself and work hard. Find positive role models. Speak loud, project, and don’t pull back.”

The visit also included lunch and a visit from Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Students later attended an official council meeting and witnessed first-hand the council’s passing of the Obama presidential library ordinance. The event offered an in-depth view of local politics and left a positive impression on the students as noted by one WOW student who remarked: “I’m thinking about going into politics now.”
